Twenty saddles of Confederate generals were systematically conserved and stabilized, including two saddles used by Robert E. Lee and three belonging to Fitzhugh Lee. Treatment included diverse cleaning methods, de-acidification and conditioning of leather, structural repairs to wooden components, stabilization of fabrics and stuffing, and polishing and lacquering of silver, copper, and brass attachments.
(All saddles are in the collection of The Museum of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia.)
